Beekeeping is the process of raising bees(Honey-bees) in order to collect honey and any other products made by or gotten from bees, products like; beeswax, pollen, propolis and royal jelly.
* Beeswax: to get wax for use in cosmetics, furniture polish, candles and crayons etc
* Pollen: used in Cosmetics, used for food, used in the preparation of medicine and hand pollination.
* Propolis: used in the repair of honeycombs.
* Venom: used in preparing medicine.
* Royal Jelly: the Queen bee food etc.
The practice of Beekeeping also known as APICULTURE is an agroforestry practice that is recognized and currently practiced worldwide and there is an increasing demand for honey in Nigeria and the world at large. Apiculture is one of the most lucrative enterprises in many parts of the world. It is a profitable business that has no negative impact on the environment. It is a profitable and a viable enterprise that requires very little investment and produces quick returns.
Honey-Bees start making honey, which is their food, by visiting flowers and collecting a sugary juice called nectar from the blossom of the flower by sucking it out, Honey bees collect nectar and convert it to honey which they store in their honey stomach. Their Honey stomach is different from their food stomach and when they have a full load, they fly back to the hives to empty it out.
Bee farming is one of those agroventures that can be started with less capital or more capital depending on your budget or preference and interestingly, Bees do not require regular, routine daily care, in simpler terms, you do not necessarily need to look after the bees as people would think because all they need is a place they can get nectar, pollen, water and a hive to live in as they pollinate farm crops such as Mango, cashew, pawpaw, coconut, oil palm, citrus, sunflowers etc, on their own and you would not need labour continually until harvest and processing period.
You do not need to own a land just for Beekeeping as you can farm them on wastelands, farmlands; If you are already a farmer, and you are interested in keeping bees, it’s even more preferable that you site your Apiary(Bee Farm) in the midst of fruit trees such as mango, citrus, etc, or you can even partner with a farmer on their farmland because placing starting a bee farm in a fruit farm will boost pollination; thereby, multiplying the harvest of the fruit farm, this is the reason bees are popularly referred to as agents of pollination since they scavenge on nectar and pollen, and some of the crops the bees pollinate also provide nectar for them, therefore, you wouldn't need to feed them.
Beekeeping is highly profit driven as you can make so much money on just the local markets alone even if you're not an exporter...
But most importantly, it is very very important that you consult with a certified Beekeeper because even though some online guides and YouTube videos might give you a head start, nothing beats a hands-on training you will get at a reputable bee farm. you need to get first hand knowledge and who better to help than one who knows and understands the science and art of Beekeeping.
Consult an Apiarist so you will get the required training from these experts to begin your Bee farm.
